Southern Mallee Lucerne – Grown in Lameroo, Stored in Echunga
Our Roots in Lameroo
At Southern Mallee Lucerne, our hay is proudly grown in Lameroo, located in South Australia’s Southern Mallee region. The area is renowned for its broad, open farmland, fertile soils, and reliable climate—making it one of the best regions in the state for producing premium lucerne.
Storage in the Adelaide Hills – Echunga
While our crops are grown in Lameroo, we also maintain a modern storage facility in Echunga, in the Adelaide Hills. This location allows:
• Store hay closer to customers in Adelaide and surrounding regions
• Maintain quality through palletised stacking and constant monitoring of moisture & temperature
• Provide faster, more convenient delivery options for our horse, cattle, and dairy customers in the Hills and metro Adelaide
This two-site approach means we can grow lucerne where conditions are perfect, while also providing secure, accessible storage closer to our end market.
Why Lameroo is Great for Hay Farming?
Sandy Loam Soils
The region is known for its well-drained sandy loam soils, which are perfect for growing both Lucerne (alfalfa) and oaten hay. These soils allow roots to grow deep and encourage strong plant development—important for multiple hay cuts per season.
Reliable Groundwater Access
Lameroo sits above a reliable groundwater table, making irrigated farming viable and consistent, even in drier years. This ensures stable Lucerne production, which is especially important for high-quality hay and seed outputs.
Low Humidity & Dry Climate
The Mediterranean-style climate with hot, dry summers and cool winters is ideal for hay curing and baling. Low humidity helps reduce the risk of mould or spoilage during the drying process.
